EA Equestrian:

equinox acres of fun!

Our Horses

We don't have that many horses at the yard, however, those that we do have are exceptional in one way or another and we are sure to be able to find you a suitable mount when you come for a ride. We also have a couple of liveries knocking around, so be prepared to be mugged for mints when you arrive!

Tamarind (Staff Horse)

8 year old Lusitano stallion -15hh-

Tamarind is the yard clown. Cheeky and inquisative, he always manages to find something to amuse himself with. Whether it's throwing buckets at David and Abigail or spooking at the same hedge he sees every day - he's become a real favourite with everyone. (Even when he treads on their feet)

Constantly getting up to mischief, he has gained a reputation for being 'difficult' but there is rarely any malice involved - he just likes the attention! However, because of this, he is only suitable for experienced riders and is definetly not a novice ride!

Kestral (Schoolie)

 - 7 year old Andalusian x mare - 15hh -

Far more laidback than Tamarind, Kestral is a perfect horse for beginners to learn on and hasn't a bad bone in her body. (She will occasionally buck, but only out of sheer high spirits)

She isn't a 'plod' by any means but isn't likely to bomb off either. 'Forward going but bombproof' was what her sales ad said when we bought her and we are very pleased to say that it was accurate. She really enjoys her jumping and makes an excellent mount for Pony Club activities and general hacking and schooling.

Kestral had her foal on Christmas Eve last year and the resulting colt is even more adorable than we had ever anticipated! (see below)

Axel

Axel arrived on a cold and blustery Christmas Eve - completely unbeknownst to the staff who had been eagerly anticipating his birth!

As the offspring of Tamarind and Kestral, we expect him to be either very problematic or very laidback. His colour surprised us too - a beautifully soft grey sabino - he will probably grey out when he's older but there's a chance he'll go the same way as his sire and stay his present shade.

Painted Lady (Schoolie)

Despite or perhaps because of her attitude, Lady has already amassed a small fan club amongst the regular riders who love a more challenging pony to ride!

7 year old Welsh mare - 12.3hh

Although she may look as though she couldn't put a foot wrong, looks can be decieving. Lady will quite happily take a chunk out of you simply for looking at her the wrong way, but if you catch her in a good mood she's pretty much perfect.

She is an excellent mount for young children when on the leadrope (she always behaves when she's being led) and a nice challenge for more experienced riders who want something a little more interesting than a 'push button pony'. She has been shown in the past to great success so we hope to continue the trend next year when the showing season begins.

Tullybannocher (Schoolie)

Later in the year, once he's settled in properly, we were thinking about breaking him to drive, if and when we manage to get ourselves a suitable vehicle and someone who knows how to work it!

- 8 year old Highland x TB gelding - 15.1hh

Tully came to us from the well known and respected Harecroft Farm down south in the Fens. He doesn't have a bad bone in his body and although new, he has already charmed his way into everyone's hearts.

He is forward going but very safe and has a nice jump. We hope to show him in the summer and get him involved in some jumping classes. At the moment we have started hacking him out and using him in lessons and he is proving to be a very sound investment indeed!

Callisto (Schoolie)

  - 11 year old Welsh Cob x mare - 15.1hh

Callisto was bought from a rescue centre by the yard and has settled into life here very quickly. She had been abandoned in a field, in foal and in very poor condition. Luckily she was rescued by a wonderful local charity and looked after until she was well enough to be rehomed. She had already had her foal by the time we decided to buy her and as he was so nice, we bought him as well!

Her past experiences strangely don't seem to have affected her a great deal and she is now a very much treasured member of the family. Cally is great with kids and adults alike and if you didn't know any better you'd never think that she'd had any difficulties in the past.

She excels at gymkhana games and although she has a fair turn of speed to her, she is 100% trustworthy around beginners and can be quite easily ridden to the field in nothing but a headcollar.

Unfortunately she's prone to weight gain in the spring, but a spot of lungeing always does the trick!

Arkas

- Cob X colt -

Having gone through terrible abuse at the hands of his previous owners, Arkas will never be ridden; however, that doesn't mean that he's worthless! Everyone who has passed by he and Callisto's stable has had to stop whatever they were doing and come and say hello.

Just over a year old now, Arkas is still every bit as cheeky and inquisitive as he was when he was a very young foal and is very  good at getting into trouble...

Maigheach of Dúneachann (Schoolie)

 6 year old Highland mare - 14.2hh

We bought Maisie from an old friend of John Lowe's who worked up on the moors of the local big estate as the gamekeeper. As part of the deer management on the estate, he often went up the hills with a small party to stalk the deer and Maisie - like many Highlands bred for the purpose - was one of the ponies that brought them back down. As a result she is completely bombproof and very easy to handle. She has shown very well in the past and it's something that we'd like to continue with her.

Rhona (Schoolie)

15 year old Highland mare - 14.2hh

Rhona came to us from the same trekking centre as Banksy. (see below)

Originally privately owned and shown, Rhona won the mare division of the Highland class at the RHS when she was a three year old and again when she was nine. With such stunning looks and a temperment like no other, its not hard to see why!

Rhona is as bombproof as they come and is suitable for riders of any age or experience. She is steady and safe enough for the smallest child and really enjoys her jumping. She has extensive natural horsemanship training and is more often than not ridden in a simple headcollar.

Banksy (Schoolie)

Despite his age and relative inexperience, Banksy makes an ideal mount for riders of all ages and abilities.

5 year old cob gelding - 15hh

Banksy came from a local trekking centre where his easygoing personality and good paces earned him a lot of love.

We were first drawn to him for his colour and size and we were delighted to find that he was of the 'bombproof hairy cob' variety, although perhaps not as hairy as some (He is prone to Mud Fever, so his feather must be kept clipped all year round)

We are hoping to get him to a dressage clinic later in the year as he has beautiful paces and would take showing classes by storm!

Jaconelli (Staff Horse)

6 year old Knabstrupper stallion -15.2hh

Jaconelli came to EAE from Jarek Janelli - a long time friend of Abigail's and the ringmaster of the family circus - Janelli's Menagerie. The circus was closing down due to poor revenue and lack of interest and Jarek offered Jac to us as a thank you present for all that Abigail had done for them over the years.

Because of a deformity in his mouth, Jaconelli cannot be bitted, although he is so well trained that it doesn't really matter.

Currently he isn't used as a schoolie, but is ridden almost exclusively by Nikolai.

Jac is registered with the SHR and will be up for stud for a short time next year.

Bambi

Bambi made friends with Axel almost as soon as they were introduced and the pair have been nigh inseparable ever since!

Bambi arrived at the yard under very mysterious circumstances. Lisa, our stand-in groom and helper, was hacking in the woods behind the stables when her horse Kerry spooked at something in the undergrowth.

That something turned out to be an adorable little dun colt - the origin of which we still don't know! We have tried our best to trace the owners but so far we have had no luck.

At the moment, Lisa has claimed him as her own and if no one comes forward, we will keep him and bring him on ourselves when he is old enough.

Manchego(Full Livery)

Unfortunately named by his new owner Aidan, 'Chego' is an Argentinian Criollo, who was shipped all the way from his homeland - only to find himself homeless when he finally got here!

Luckily Aidan took him on and despite having no horse experience, seems to be coping quite well with him.He has him on full livery here until he's able to look after him himself.

The language barrier is obviously a bit of a problem but we're working on that!

Ptolemy (Part Livery)

- 9 year old Arabian/Welsh Cob stallion - 16hh

Ptolemy, (or Terry as he is more commonly known) arrived at the yard on a cold, wet and blustery day this autumn.

First time horse owner Marian bought him with the help and experience of Nikolai, who liked the look of him and his attitude towards people.

Although he's a lot bigger than she was looking for (she'd originally planned on getting something around the 14.2hh mark!) Terry made a big impression on her and after only a couple of rides and a hack, she had her heart set on buying him.

Not being particularly competitive, Marian only really intends to hack and school him, with the occasional informal show every now and again.

Dancing With Shadows (DIY Livery)

6 year old Irish Sporthorse gelding - 16.3hh

Very affectionate and always mooching for sweeties - Mitchell has already gathered a substantial fanclub among the yard regulars. Owned by the very lucky Jenny; Mitchell, or Dancing With Shadows as he is known on the show circuit, is well on his way to a promising eventing career.

As he's a livery, he isn't used in lessons or hacks, but if you speak very nicely to Jenny, she might let you give her a hand when he needs lunged or schooled.

Harper (Part-Livery)

3 year old TB gelding - 17hh

Harper was raced in Ireland as a 2 year old, but when it became clear that he didn't posess the speed necessary to be a top class racehorse, he was sold off cheaply at an auction here in the UK. Luckily he was spotted by Lindsey Reynolds who took one look at that face of his and bought him on the spot.

Unfortunately, as much as she loves him, Lindsey doesn't have the time to bring him on herself as she is envariably tied up with the three other horses that she owns and rides for the film and television industry. However, both David and Nikolai have volunteered to help train him so all is not lost!

Archie (Working Livery)

- 7 year old Cob gelding - 15.2hh

Another newcomer to the yard - Archie is a livery here, although will soon be earning his keep as a part time schoolie!

Generally speaking, Archie is a typical laidback sort of cob, but put a jump up and he morphs into an eventer! He puts great enthusiasm into his jumping and we hope that he and his owner Ailie will be in the ribbons at shows soon.

Rhu (Part Livery)

-14 year old Welsh X gelding

Ever since she was little, Rosie McPherson has wanted a pony so you can imagine her surprise when, on her ninth birthday, that dream became a reality!

You'll find Rhu's name in the dictionary beside 'bombproof schoolmaster' and Rosie's hoping to show him this year in novice and veteran classes.

Kerrygold (DIY Livery)

- 9 year old PB Arab gelding -15hh

Laidback and very easy going, Kerry has one of the nicest personalities of any horse we know. He is perfect in the school and has almost perfect manners to match, although he has been known to get a bit strong out on hacks!

Kerry is a livery at the yard and so isn't used in lessons, although his owner Lisa does hack him out a lot so if you come for a ride here there is a very good chance you will bump into them out on the moors!

Roscoe (Full Livery)

  6 year old ID x Gelding - 17hh

Although not stabled here as yet, Roscoe's owner Dawn is considering Abigail's offer to keep him here for a few months and see if we can reschool him and iron out some of his bad habits.

He's a lovely horse with a lot of potential but he often doesn't listen, which causes problems all round. We;ll keep you updated on his progress.

Rocky (Schoolie)

Rocky only has one fault as far as we can tell - he's too small!

9 year old Welsh Sec A gelding - 11hh

Rocky has been a successful show pony since he was a young colt so it came as no surprise when he won the local M&M class by a large margin recently. When he's not counting his winnings he can be seen in the beginner lessons and hacks.

Rocky is usually very quiet and loves nothing more than a quiet hack along Hollowcroft Moor on a warm day. He is perfect for beginners as well as experienced riders small enough to ride him.

Todd

- Age Unknown Donkey Jack - 13hh -

Todd arrived quite literally on our doorstep one night last winter after having been abandoned by whoever owned him before us. We still can't quite understand why someone would do that as he has the sweetest and most gentle personality of any of our animals at the yard. We discovered that he was broken to ride and has found his niche taking young children on leadouts and beginner lessons; straying onto the beach on nice days to help raise money for charity.

Spud

12 year old Donkey Jack - 13.2hh

Spud makes a very good ride, especially on the beach where he really comes into his own. He may look intimidating, but he's a big teddy bear inside!

Like our other donkeys, Spud spends most of his time lazing around in the field and eating himself silly. All this grazing has its downsides however, and he has recently discovered the problems associated with overeating so we are keeping him on a strict diet until he learns to control himself a bit more!

We're starting to suspect that Abigail likes to collect Donkeys...

Ted Tonks

-15 year old Miniature Donkey Jack -9hh-

Ted is a very cuddly sort of donkey who enjoys nothing more than dozing in his field and mooching polos off visitors to the yard. He can usually be found in the so called 'Long-Eared-Field' along with Todd, Rocky and Spud.

Because of his size he isn't really suitable for lessons, although we do use him for leadouts for the under fives and the occasional beach ride. He likes to pretend that he's actually 17hh so please humour him or face his tiny, fuzzy wrath.
